What is UPF 50+?

Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) indicates how much UV radiation (both UVB and UVA) a fabric allows to reach your skin. For example, a UPF 50 fabric blocks 98 percent of the sun’s rays and allows two percent (1/50th) to penetrate, thus reducing your exposure risk significantly.

How long does UPF 50 last?

Typically, UPF clothing that is properly cared for will last for 40 washes. This means most will last roughly one to two years under normal usage of a few times a month. Or, if you use them on a scuba diving trip, you know a week off work, you will probably wash them when you are back home. If you go on two trips per year, you can use them for 20 years!! 😃

Can you tan with UPF 50?

Yes, as it doesn’t block all ultraviolet rays, you can still tan with UPF 50. Not much, but the 2% of rays that pass through, allows you to get a little bit of tan while protecting your skin.
